Protecting the Legacy: Alabama State University’s Call to Action

Alabama State University (ASU), one of the nation’s oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), founded in 1867, has launched a compelling campaign titled “Protect the Legacy,” designed to raise awareness and funds to counteract potential federal funding cuts.

The campaign highlights why ASU matters deeply, emphasizing its critical role in supporting Black and African American students, who constitute over 90% of its enrollment. A significant majority (73%) of ASU students receive Pell Grants, highlighting the financial challenges many face coming from low-income backgrounds. Moreover, while HBCUs represent just 3% of colleges nationwide, they proudly produce 27% of all Black STEM graduates, further underlining their essential contribution to higher education and workforce diversity.

Federal funding, including Pell Grants and Title III, acts as lifelines for more than 70% of ASU students. The infographic outlines the potentially devastating consequences of proposed federal cuts, such as reduced financial aid, elimination of tutoring and retention programs, and a negative impact on Black faculty recruitment and retention.

The “Protect the Legacy” initiative stresses three core pillarsβ€”Culture, Commitment, and Communityβ€”each reinforcing ASU’s dedication to student success, cultural empowerment, and creating an enduring support network among alumni, families, and community members.

Our entering class of 2000 aims to raise $250,000 to secure resources necessary for the university to continue providing educational excellence and meaningful opportunities. The campaign also underscores the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, asserting that they are essentialβ€”not just optionalβ€”for student success and well-being.

Supporters can join this important cause by donating, pledging monthly gifts, or helping spread awareness. The infographic encourages individuals to become proactive advocates for education equity, preserving ASU’s role as not just a university, but a beacon of Black brilliance and empowerment.
